UGTs are expressed primarily in the liver, intestine, and kidney and catalyze the incorporation of the glucuronide moiety of the nucleotide urea-5'-diphosphate-α-D-glucuronide (UDPGA) into the nucleophilic hydroxyl, sulfhydryl or amino groups of pharmacologically active drugs, phase I drug metabolites, and specific endogenous substrates such as steroid hormones, bile acids, and bilirubin.UGTs also promote first-pass effect pre-drug metabolism, which significantly reduces the oral bioavailability of some drugs. Creative Bioarray's UGT Activity Assay Screening Kit allows quick examination of native/recombinant UGT activity in biological samples such as liver microsomes and can also provide an evaluation of the effect of novel compounds on UGT activity.
