The liver is a highly specialized metabolic organ that plays a major role in detoxification, drug metabolism, nutrition processing, immunological modulation, and bile generation. Hepatic cell populations are composed of parenchymal and non-parenchymal compartments that work together to maintain liver homeostasis and coordinate responses to damage, inflammation, fibrosis and regeneration.
