What are the common protective agents used when freezing cells?

Glycerol or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is usually used as a protective agent (osmotic type). These two substances have small molecular weight and high solubility, which can easily penetrate cells, lower the freezing point, improve the permeability of cell membranes to water, and are not significantly toxic to cells.
