Established from the malignant primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) of a 42-year-old HIV+ man at diagnosis (prior to therapy) without a previous history of Kaposis sarcoma; cells were shown to carry the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), but not the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and not the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
