The oxidation of neutral or slightly basic lipophilic compounds with 2-3 hydrogen bound donor/acceptor sites is catalyzed by CYP2C19, which is primarily expressed in the liver and intestinal organs. CYP2C19 subfamily isoforms play a role in the metabolism of roughly 20% of routinely prescribed small molecule medicines. Clinical drug-drug interactions involving a wide range of prescribed drugs, including proton pump inhibitors, antiplatelet agents, and anticonvulsants, have been linked to the human CYP2C19 gene polymorphisms.
