CYP1A2 catalyzes the oxidation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds and is found mostly in the liver, nasal mucosal tissues, and the intestine. About 10% of routinely used small molecule medicines have CYP1A2 implicated in their metabolism. Clinical drug-drug interactions involving frequently used medications, such as caffeine, theophylline, and the antipsychotic clozapine, have been linked to polymorphisms in the human CYP1A2 gene.
