Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) are a type pf pluripotent stem cell artificially derived, and often referred to as programmed, from adult somatic cells using the expression of certain genes in culture. Using adult somatic cells, they have been reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state by being forced to express genes and factors important for maintaining undifferentiated embryonic stem cells. Since the discovery that human iPSCs could be generated by inducing expression of the four reprogramming factors (OCT-4, SOX-2, KLF-4 and c-MYC) many different reprogramming technologies have emerged to generate iPSCs, each possessing their own advantages and disadvantages.
