The cell line is a subclone of its parent HELA derived in 1955. This cell line can be adapted to grow in suspension; the cells are positive for keratin by immunoperoxidase staining. The HELA-S3 clone has been very useful in the clonal analysis of mammalian cell populations relating to chromosomal variation, cell nutrition, and plaque-forming ability.
Homo sapiens, human
STR DNA Profile
Human flat-moded hypotriploid karyotype with 32% polyploidy - 68(53-68)<3n>XX, -X, +1, -2, -4, +5, +8, +12, -13, -14, -20, -21, -22, -22, +4mar - del(1)(p35), der(1)t(1;3) (p11;q11), der(3)t(3;5)(q11;q11), i(5p)x2, del(6)(q23), add(6)(q27), del(7)(q32).
The HELA-S3 cell line can be used for tumourigenicity, virus studies (poliovirus 1 and Ad 3) and clonal analysis of mammalian cell populations.
