Compact bone (cortical or dense bone) is among the organs that contain multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Unlike bone marrow plugs where MSCs were initially isolated, compact bone has minimal (amount of) hematopoietic cells and thus facilitates the MSCs isolation process. In vitro, MSCs from compact bone show multipotency and differentiation into mesenchymal tissues such as bone, adipose, and cartilage, under certain conditions. Read more >
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a fatal thrombohemorrhagic disorder. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are multipotent stem cells that have tremendous therapeutic effect. Our aim was to explore whether the immune mechanisms were associated with BMSCs-afforded protection against DIC. Read more >
High radiation sensitivity of stem cells and their ability to accumulate sublethal radiation damage provides the basis for investigation of hematopoietic progenitors using in vivo culture methodology. Unique samples of peripheral blood and bone marrow were derived from the patients affected by Chornobyl accident during liquidation campaign.
Liver injury after experimental acetaminophen treatment is mediated both by direct hepatocyte injury through a P450-generated toxic metabolite and indirectly by activated liver Kupffer cells and neutrophils. This study was designed to investigate the role of Notch signaling in the regulation of innate immune responses in acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury. Read more >
Radiotherapy is one of the major treatment modalities for the management of various cancers, however, it is limited by the severe side effects and complications experienced by some patients. Nicaraven, a chemically synthesized hydroxyl radical-specific scavenger, has been shown to protect normal tissues from radiation-induced injury. Read more >
Sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients suffered from severe trauma. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) -based treatment has been verified as a promising approach to mitigate the sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction, but the mechanism is still ambiguous. Read more >
Stem cell-based therapies have potential for treatment of liver injury by contributing to regenerative responses, through functional tissue replacement or paracrine effects. The release of extracellular vesicles (EV) from cells has been implicated in intercellular communication, and may contribute to beneficial paracrine effects of stem cell-based therapies. Read more >
The bone marrow (BM) contains controlled specialized microenvironments, or niches, that regulate the quiescence, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC). The glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) is a gut-derived incretin hormone that mediates postprandial insulin secretion and has anabolic effects on adipose tissue. Read more >
